Dr. Thomas A. Drohan Assistant to the Commandant for Academic Affairs

Dr. Thomas A. Drohan is the Assistant to the Commandant for Academic Affairs and Dean of the National Defense College in the United Arab Emirates. He previously served as Professor and Head of the Military and Strategic Studies Department at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Visiting Scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Adjunct Professor at the University of Denver Korbel School of International Studies, Curriculum Advisor at the National Military Academy of Afghanistan, Chief of Force Protection and Anti-Terrorism at U.S. Forces Korea, Chief of Air and Missile Defense at Combined Forces Command Korea, and Vice Commandant of Cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Dean Drohan earned his bachelor's degree from the United States Air Force Academy, his master's degrees from the University of Hawaii and Princeton University, and his doctorate from Princeton University. He is a retired United States Air Force brigadier general, tactical airlift pilot, and combat rescue pilot with command experience in airlift operations and military education. His operational experience includes deployments to the Middle East, Central Asia, East Asia, and Europe. His military education includes Strategy, Intelligence Analysis, Joint Doctrine, Special Operations, Anti-Terrorism, and Air and Space Operations.

Dean Drohan’s academic interests include international relations, grand strategy, strategic culture, defense policy, civil-military relations, asymmetric warfare, joint operations design, and decision-making simulations. He has published articles in Joint Force Quarterly, Defense Studies, Aerospace Power Journal, the Pacific Forum, and The Airman-Scholar Journal; he has presented papers and conducted seminars worldwide on security and strategy, irregular warfare, intelligence analysis, military education, and effects-based operations.

His published books are: American-Japanese Security Agreements: Past and Present (McFarland, 2007) and A New Strategy for Complex Warfare: Combined Effects in East Asia (Cambria, 2016). Dean Drohan has been recognized as an East-West Center Scholar at the University of Hawaii, Pew Faculty Fellow in International Affairs at Harvard University, and Council on Foreign Relations International Fellow in Japan.

Dean Drohan is the son of a career Air Force officer. He and his wife live in Abu Dhabi and Colorado. They are the proud parents of a son and a daughter. .
