Gamal Selim Ph.D. Associate Professor
Dr. Gamal Selim’s expertise lies at the nexus of international relations and comparative politics, with a focus on international relations theory, foreign policy analysis, arms control and non-proliferation, politics of development, international relations of the Middle East, and the rise of China. Before joining the National Defense College (NDC), he served as a Professor of Political Science at the British University in Egypt and Port Said University from 2012 to 2024. He also served as a Sessional Instructor of Political Science at the University of Calgary from 2008 to 2011.
Dr. Selim received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Calgary (Canada), and his MA and BA in Political Science from the American University in Cairo (Egypt). He is the author of two books: Global and Regional Approaches to Arms Control in the Middle East: A Critical Assessment from the Arab World (Springer International Publishing, 2013); and The International Dimensions of Democratization in Egypt: The Limits of Externally-Induced Change (Springer International Publishing, 2015).
Dr. Selim has also published numerous articles in academic journals. His articles have appeared in Arab Studies Quarterly, British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Journal of Contemporary Iraq and the Arab World, Journal of the Social Sciences, and Mediterranean Review. His most recent work include: “The Great Debates and Their Impact on the Discipline of International Relations” (2024); “The Arab League and the Crisis of Westphalian Sovereignty in the Arab World after 2011” (2023); “Egyptian Foreign Policy after the 2011 Revolution: The Dynamics of Continuity and Change” (2022); “Sino-Egyptian Relations post-2013: The Dynamics and Challenges of an Emerging Strategic Partnership” (2021); “The Sino-Russian Strategic Understanding on the Arab Uprisings: Motivations and Implications” (2019); and “The Impact of the Arab Revolutions on Asia: An Analysis of the Diffusion Effect” (2017).
