UAE’s Membership of Security Council

By the 50th anniversary of the UAE Union, the UAE unleashes its achievements in various fields including political achievements. The UAE has demonstrated its important and effective role at the international and regional levels. Today, its winning a non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council reflects the deep belief of the GCC countries in the UAE's strategic role, the success of all its international efforts in international events, and its ability to solve international and regional problems.

The countries of the world trust the great role played by the UAE as an active, influential, and positive element of the international system. The UAE represents the Asia-Pacific Group and represents the Arab voice being elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council with 179 out of 190 General Assembly votes. Members of the UN General Assembly have elected UAE to the Security Council for the period 2022 to 2023, along with Albania, Brazil, Gabon, and Ghana. The UAE has earned the world's confidence through its effective foreign policy and human values and has become an ideal model for diplomatic relations that contributes to strengthening human relations among nations.

UAE has recorded a real historical victory as a result of its diplomatic efforts and competencies and constructive strategy. The UAE's historical record of achievements, international aids, and ethical dealings with all nations has made it an example of a civilized and distinguished country based on humanity and tolerance, prompting the countries of the world to vote for it as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

The UAE's strategic position qualifies it to play a distinctive international role supported by its active diplomacy and the ability to create common grounds for all countries of the world, contributing to security, peace, and stability in the world. In addition, UAE has a huge diplomatic network and a very effective soft power, having a global position in the soft power (17), as well as being the top regional soft power.

UAE has an active and important role in diplomatically resolving many outstanding and hot global issues through negotiations and discussions. Its historical roles are evident in making peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea, overcoming all difficulties in the Sudan peace agreement, contributing significantly to ending tension between India and Pakistan, as well as its ability to build a cooperation bridge with all countries of the world by virtue of its privileged political position and diplomatic relations with all countries of the world.

The UAE has an active leading role in humanitarian work through the UAE Red Crescent's significant efforts in providing relief and humanitarian assistance around the world as well as the role played by many charities in the country in providing humanitarian assistance to many of the world's affected nations. Moreover, its role is evident in the humanitarian assistance provided during the Corona Pandemic (COVID-19) to 129 countries around the world.

The UAE has a strong and attractive economy for foreign investments. This strong economy is supported by an effective foreign policy, which helped UAE to have a strong presence at the regional and international levels. The UAE is the world's leading economic, investment, and trade hub with a tremendous economic power of diversity and stability, and a critical center in global innovation and creativity being ranked globally as one of the top 10 in the field of economic stability and security, and global diplomatic influence.

The credibility, realism, and transparency that mark the UAE's foreign policy and wise leadership, have entitled it to take this important role in the Security Council and to achieve a stable, secure, and civilized international community in addition to having good relations and cooperation with all countries of the world. This type of foreign policy has helped UAE in its efforts to achieve agreement among the permanent members of the Security Council. The UAE has always preferred negotiations and dialogue over using force, especially in dealing with complex issues and crises. UAE  has a large network of friends, partners, and allies in the world because it possesses an advanced development model and an effective knowledge approach based on the values of tolerance, moderation, spreading peace, openness to all cultures, and establishing the principles of cooperation and high values. It is a country that aims to achieve peace and prosperity in addition to the deep belief of all countries in the world that the UAE always seeks and emphasizes peace, tolerance, fruitful dialogue, and the restoration of rights to its owners.

Security, political and military dimensions of the membership:

One of the important dimensions of the UAE' membership in the Security Council is the realization of the great opportunity to maintain international peace and security and to have the standard of building bridges and living together, cooperation and tolerance to build a world of love, security, and peace. In addition, the UAE has a strong political and military influence at an international level; the Non-permanent membership in the Security Council gives the Emirates a leading role, opens up broad perspectives, and contributes to global issues. The fact that the UAE has obtained a non-permanent seat on the Security Council contributes to the expansion and diversification of its political and military options in the international arena, as reflected in the strengthening of its relations with the major world powers and all regional powers that are influential and emerging, and the establishment of strategic partnerships with many countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

The formation of relations of friendship and cooperation with the countries of the world will contribute to the achievement of security arrangements at the regional, Arab, and international levels. Developments, changes in the world, challenges, and threats will be addressed through the opening of interactive channels with all parties, partners, and allies in the world. The fact that the UAE has obtained a non-permanent seat on the Security Council contributes to building the security dimension of the Arab region through its ongoing efforts to establish and strengthen security and stability in the Arab region.

One of the main dimensions on which the UAE can focus is to contribute to resolving the outstanding Arab issues through its active political role as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, as the Arab region is burdened with conflicts and disputes, the main dimension of the UAE's representation in a non-permanent seat on the Security Council is to design an ideal road map that could push for solutions through comprehensive, just and lasting crisis settlements. As a non-permanent member of the Security Council, the UAE has an important and effective political dimension, particularly in Arab issues, by breaking the deadlock in political processes and by working to make the international community hear the Arab voice, whose causes cannot be lax.

It also has an important dimension in the face of new global security threats, particularly in the fight against the Corona pandemic, climate change, and the need to rely on renewable energy and to assume roles, responsibilities, and tasks that go beyond the geographical and regional surroundings of the State, the ambition sought by the Emirates is global.

The UAE will play its responsibility as a platform at the global level in its important role in representing the voice of the Arab world and the continent of Asia because representation is a diplomatic achievement in representing the Arab Group and Asia and the Pacific. In addition, wise leadership will have the following responsibilities.

Designing an integrated program of issues to be defended at the Security Council at all levels, economic, political and social, health security and poverty issues in support of development and humanitarian programs in some countries of the world, climate change issues, the adoption of renewable energy and the protection of the environment from pollution.

Preparing the ground for durable political solutions consistent with Arab interests, to break the deadlock, to resolve existing disputes and conflicts in the world and to reduce tensions, especially in the Arab region; and the adoption of a proactive, positive and active strategy and methodology in resolving the hot issues in the world.

Setting a clear vision in addressing the Corona pandemic, due to its success in addressing this file at the state level. The UAE is considered one of the first countries in the world in addressing this pandemic.

The UAE has played a major role in strengthening the foundations of international law by strengthening international law and by promoting and contributing to the maintenance of international peace and security, and the rejection of double standards in the UN Security Council that prevents the Security Council from fulfilling its obligations and taking responsibility for the maintenance of global peace and security.

Its greatest responsibility as a member of the Security Council is to combat terrorism and extremism throughout the world.

In conclusion, I would like to congratulate the wise leadership of the UAE on this remarkable achievement, its unique diplomatic model, and its leading and unique role in building and strengthening human relations among peoples. The UAE has gained the confidence of the world in its policy and has provided a diplomatic model for promoting relations between States and peoples in the service of humanity.
